Akira thought that they had seen enough of sadness through the Spectraclysm when she had lost her husband and her daughter Tempest had lost her long term partner and the father of her children. She was looking forward to better times and more peaceful golden years when she moved with her daughter and grandchildren to Spectrum Hills, and indeed everything seemed fine at first. She cheered as her grandson, Khayri, showed off to her how he could do a headstand after the taxi dropped them off at their new home.
Tempest, however, wasn't as sure it was going to be ok. She hadn't felt well during the taxi drive to their new home, and as she stood by the curb holding Keturah, she began to feel her stomach cramping more and more. Carefully setting the little girl down on the ground before she dropped her, her body was soon wracked with spasms and her breath started to choke off in her throat. Akira could only stand mutely by in stunned silence as she watched her daughter succumb to the sudden onslaught of the poisoning that she thought they had left behind them.
Keturah, too young to understand what was happening to her mother, crawled off to play with some butterflies that were flitting around in front of the house while Khayri and Akira, her silence finally broken, mourned Tempest's passing as the Grim Reaper came to take her away.
As Akira stood staring at her daughter's tombstone afterward, she wondered how much more tragedy she would have to bear before it was all over. At length though, she heard the Keturah's giggles as she tried to catch the butterflies, and they brought her back to the present as the full weight of her new responsibilities settled upon her. These two young children would depend on her now, and she needed to get it together. And so, she gathered Keturah up into her arms and headed into the house, calling for Khayri to follow.
